The Most Important Quality in the Garden: Texture

Especially for those who grow perennials (and shrubs…and trees), the beauty or lack thereof of the plant when not in flower should be the crucial deciding factor in whether to include a plant in your garden or not.  Considering that most plants outside of annuals only flower for two-three weeks, the view during the eleven months of non-flowering are arguably a more important determinant.  Continuing along this idea, it is my definite opinion that foliage texture is more important than flower color in garden design.
